- When fashion really hits the street!
- Central Saint Martins College Of Art And Design
- Dayo, December 2006
- Overall rating
- Course content *****
- My course was a 5 weeks (Saturdays) short course in Sports and Street Design at the Central Saint Martins Lane College of Fashion. I was actually going to enrol for a different course in fashion at the college, but after reading the information on the course I decided this would be the ideal course for me, as I wanted to start my own fashion label. I was the only man on the course amongst eight women plus the lecturer but I was really made to feel at home by everyone. The first class was great; we had a brief history of Fashion by the lecturer Lynette, who was great and very inspiring throughout the course. The second week, Lynette took us all to a 60?s fashion exhibition at the Royal Albert Museum in South Kensington and after to Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill to look at current street fashion trends and identify our potential customers. We took pictures of people with their permission and used them to develop our trend boards with a profile of our targeted customer. It was the nature of this creativity and practical application of the course that really made me enjoy it. I learnt so many things about fashion that I would have never learnt before, I went to Portobello Market, which I had never been to before and my fellow students were great to work and study with. Lynnette was brilliant and used her knowledge and wealth of experience in the Fashion Industry to give me brilliant ideas about creating my fashion label. I finished the course with all these great ideas, the wonderful experience of the places I went to and with as a certificate of attendance. I intend to do another course there in January 2007 in ?How to start your Fashion Business?, which will also be run by Lynnette. So I can now confidently say that I do have some ?Street Fashion? sense and I am really looking forward to starting my fashion label!

- Exceptional teaching in a beautiful location

- I have not done the kimono course but the three month costume construction course given by the same institution. Not only was the teaching clear, practical and enthusiastic but it is a beautiful location to learn in. I was taught by many trained professionals who have worked in a variety of areas of costume. It is a relaxed and friendly environment despite the full time training you would have thought would be stressful During my time there I completed three costume projects from three different periods, visited local and national textile suppliers, museums and was taught detailed dressmaking skills. I had a wonderful three months, met some fantastic people, made beautiful things and am now working as a costumier.

- Skills to get started
- Kensington And Chelsea College
- Alena, April 2007

- Course content *****
- I attended a two-halfday weekend course at LISPA earlier this year, and I must say it was the best weekend I've spent all year! The atmosphere was one of sharing, and everyone had a chance to explore their own ways of creating theatre, under the expert guidance of Thomas Prattki, who pushed our boundaries while respecting our limitations. While there was a certain amount of structure to the workshops, there was still a very strong feeling that the course would have followed completely different paths if different people had signed on to take part. I left feeling my creativity had been re-invigorated and hope to go back for another short course as soon as possible!
- Student facilities ***
- The space is one very large warehouse, open and bare. The facilities may not be much, but there is certainly room to move about and the space acts as a blank canvas to work against.
- Social life *****
- When I attended, the group was mostly female, but there was a wide range of people. Nationality, background, level of expertise and type of experience (dancers, mime artists, actors, writers) were all varied. Yet everyone seemed to get what they wanted out of it.

- Course content *****
- This university is the best for fashion and design. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested. However, it is a very enjoyable and compact course, what with learning all aspects of the fashion world in the three years. Many shows and exhibitions to be involved in.
- Student facilities *****
- The university could be in a better place but the facilities inside are great. There are big exhibition halls where you can display your work, and large lecture and practical rooms for the designing with many sewing machines for everyone's use.
- Social life *****
- Very similar minded people who are interested in the same things. Nice bars and clubs to visit and socialise in. Going out is a lot of fun and we can try out our new designs.

- Student facilities *****
- The course materials are well presented and easy to read. It is home based learning so you have all you need to hand and there's always time to study in between my full time job and daily life.
- Social life *****
- There is always some one on line to give you advice if you need it, or just a chat. the tutor is available on line too after the first module which will be a great help.

- Course content *****
- The tutor was very inspiring, and provided sufficient attention and feedback. You really need to be self-motivated to get the most out of this course, and want to spend some of your spare time researching material and going round fabric shops.
- Student facilities ****
- Could have been better, since getting fabric samples from fabric shops can be pricey. I'm surprised LCF don't have a discount scheme for those on course. Otherwise: great library.
- Social life ***
- Fun people, but not all very committed to putting in the hard work that was needed.

- The course was great, everything I was taught has been relevent in my career. I really enjoyed all the subjects and if was a great mix of the creative and the academic with flexibility in projects. I found when I went to work in the industry my knowledge was invaluable because we had covered from design right through to production. The academics and technicians are brilliant they were always ther for us and couldn't have been more supportive.
- Student facilities *****
- The facilities were fantastic, some of the best in the country. I'ts all being done up at the moment but should be fab when its finished.
- Social life *****
- Althought its a small campus the atmosphere is what you make of it. I had a fantastic time and a brilliant social life. If I could I'd go back to Galashiels and do it all again.

- Paul Thomas Shoes
- Helen , November 2008

- Course content *****
- Shopping for shoes was no longer enough. I wanted to learn how to make these often beautiful sculptural pieces. Paul Thomas' handmade shoemaking courses were recommended to me by a previous student. The attention to detail and precision craftsmanship that Paul has taught me is money well spent. There are many processes in making a pair of shoes. Paul guides and explains each step. It is a strict methodology focusing on precision and design. No aspect can be rushed. So it is incredibly relaxing! The course is also a lot of fun and it is extremely fulfilling to see the finished shoes!
- Student facilities *****
- Paul has fantastic equipment for every aspect of the shoemaking process. The workshop is light and airy. It is an inspiring place to be.
- Social life *****
- Fellow students are very keen and supportive of each other. We all have a laugh too!
